My grandpa Jake passed on from this earth over the weekend. He was ninety-six and he went peacefully, next to my grandmother, surrounded by the love and care of his family. I’m thankful for a lifetime of memories with my grandfather. I feel particularly fortunate to have had the time to know him as an adult. I got to see him as a full human being - with complexities and flaws but also with unexpected softness and appreciation for life’s simple joys. I will remember my grandpa when I piece together puzzles, when I sneak food scraps to the dogs under the dinner table, and when I look out at the Mississippi River and take in the beauty of the world around us. 96 years is a good life. May we all be so blessed. Rest easy, grandpa Jake.
